Sondai Fort Trek
One-day beginner fort trek from Mumbai, Pune and Karjat
Sondai Fort Trek is a short and scenic beginner-friendly trek near Sondewadi village in the Karjat region of Raigad district, Maharashtra.
The fort is part of the Matheran hill range and is known for its green monsoon slopes, forest trail, rock-cut steps, fixed iron ladders, water cisterns and panoramic views of Morbe Dam and the surrounding Sahyadri hills.
The trek is named after Sondai Devi, whose sacred shrine is located at the summit.
The popular route begins from Sondewadi village and gradually climbs through open village terrain, forest sections and rocky patches before reaching two fixed iron ladders near the final summit section.
The Sondewadi route is commonly estimated at approximately 1.5–1.7 km one way. Most fit trekkers take around 1.5–2 hours to reach the summit, while organised groups may take longer because of safety briefings, rest stops, photographs, ladder queues and group coordination.
Sondai is suitable for fit beginners and first-time trekkers. However, wet rocks, muddy ground, iron ladders, fog and weekend crowds require caution during the monsoon.
TrekHievers offers departure options from Mumbai, Pune, Karjat railway station and the base village. Packages include the services listed under the selected ticket category.

Brief history of Sondai Fort
Sondai Fort is a compact hill fort commonly described as a former watchtower used to observe movement through the surrounding Sahyadri region.
Unlike larger administrative forts, Sondai does not contain extensive palace ruins or large gateways.
The fort is named after Sondai Devi, whose shrine is located at the summit.
The exact construction period is not clearly documented across reliable historical records, so the page should avoid claiming a specific ruler or construction year without supporting evidence.
